Mouthwash is used to help rinse away bacteria or food particles after you brush and floss each day. Using mouthwash is an additional way to help protect your teeth and gums. Knowing the differences between mouthwashes can help you choose the right one to incorporate into your oral hygiene routine.

What Are The Different Types of Mouthwashes Available?

Mouthwash With Fluoride

Fluoride mouthwash contain sodium fluoride, and this helps to protect your teeth from decay and cavities. Fluoride is also found in toothpaste and is added to our tap water. Only using the required amount each day is important because too much fluoride can be harmful to your health. Reading the labels can help to ensure you are only using the appropriate amount that is recommended daily.

Antiseptic Mouthwash

Antiseptic mouthwash is the most common mouthwash used by most patients. This type of mouthwash contains alcohol and can help to stop bacteria in its tracks. Using an antiseptic mouthwash can help fight bad breath, and prevent infections. Patients must be careful using this type of mouthwash. Overuse can lead to stains or discoloration on your teeth. Following the recommended daily guidelines is important to keep your teeth and mouth healthy.

Cosmetic Mouthwash

This type of mouthwash is used to only freshen your breath. Cosmetic mouthwash does not do anything to help with your oral health. Using this type of mouthwash can help rinse food particles away, and is a temporary solution for bad breath.

Natural Mouthwash

Natural mouthwash is a common type of mouthwash that helps keep bacteria away and freshens your breath, but contains only natural ingredients. Natural mouthwash brands do not contain alcohol, and the ingredients are safer compared to other types of mouthwashes available.

Dental care can be costly, and simple procedures can even run up your bill. Caring for your teeth is necessary to keep your oral and general health in check. Many people have no dental benefits at all, or if they retire their benefits are lost.

Skipping dental care is not an option, and can lead to other more serious health issues such as diabetes, or heart conditions. There are ways you can reduce your dental care costs, and help pay for those costly procedures that are necessary to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Ask Your Dentist if They Offer an In-House Membership Plan

Many dental practices today offer their own dental membership for patients. These plans act like an insurance plan, and give patients discounts on procedures that are done in their office. If a patient does not have insurance it is wise to inquire about an in-house plan to help keep costs down.

Sign Up for a Dental Plan Through Your Employer

Many companies offer both medical and dental insurance plans. Most plans pay for at least half of the cost, and preventative services are typically covered 100 percent. Routine procedures are usually covered around 80 percent, and larger more involved procedures such as crowns are usually covered at 50 percent. Using in-network providers can help you save money, and allow you to get the dental work you need.

Dental Savings Plan

Dental savings plans are available to participants who pay a fee to join. The fee is typically annual, and allows you to choose from a network of dentists that offer discounts for members. Dental savings plans allow patients to get the work done that they need at a discounted price without insurance.

Affordable Care Act

Patients can apply for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act. Logging on to their website can let you know if you qualify to purchase dental coverage.

Dental HMO Plan

A dental HMO plan may be available in your state. Typically cleanings and exams twice a year are covered, and procedures are at a discount. Many dentists participate and accept HMO plans, and this is a good way to help save on dental care.

Veterans Benefits

If you are a veteran you qualify to receive insurance at a reduced rate. Disabled veterans are also eligible for free dental care through the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Do Your Research

If you are required to have a costly procedure, research the average price of that procedure. Ask your dentist for a discount, and most likely they will work with you, and help find a price and payment plan that fits your needs.

Create an Emergency Dental Fund

Setting aside money each month for dental care can help cover procedures or emergencies that are unpredictable.  Knowing you have a savings account will put you at ease if an emergency arises and you need dental care.

Dental Implant

If you have been recommended for dental implants you may be overwhelmed with all of the implant choices available. Our team can help you choose which implant works best for you and discuss what your options are.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are similar to an artificial tooth root that is placed in the jaw bone. The implants serve as a base for one or many artificial teeth or crowns. Implants can be used to help patients with missing teeth and can be personalized to fit each patient’s needs.

What Are The Types of Dental Implants?

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal implants are the most common type of dental implant used today. This type of implant acts like an artificial tooth root that is placed in the jaw bone. These implants create a base for one or many artificial teeth or crowns that are affixed on top. During the implant process healing time is needed for the implant to fuse to the jawbone. This type of implant is durable, long lasting, and a popular choice.

Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal implants are a good alternative to endosteal implants. This type of implant sits on top of the jawbone, but is still under the gum line. Using a metal frame the post is attached and the gum then heals around the frame. This allows the implant to be held securely in place. Artificial teeth or crowns are then placed on top of the poles that are in the gum area. In many cases this type of implant is used if patients do not have enough jawbone to support endosteal implants. Bone grafting can be done to provide the additional bone needed, but some patients choose to not go through that process.

What Are My Alternatives?

If a patient’s jawbone cannot support dental implants there are techniques available to help rebuild the jawbone and create a stable foundation for implants.

  • Bone Augmentation – This procedure helps to restore or regenerate bone in the jaw when a patient does not have enough to support an implant. This process is very successful, and many patients choose this process in order to get those implants they have always wanted.
  • Sinus Lift – A sinus lift can add bone below the sinus cavity to help that area if bone has deteriorated.
  • Ridge Expansion – Bone grafting material can be added along the top of the jaw or small ridge to help make your jaw wide enough to support dental implants.

What Are Other Dental Implant Options?

  • Mini Dental Implants – Mini dental implants are similar to traditional dental implants, but they are used for smaller spaces. Patients that have naturally smaller teeth may find that mini dental implants fit them best. This procedure is less invasive and tends to be less expensive compared to other options. Mini dental implants are made of one solid piece that is screwed into the jawbone. Each implant has a ball on top and this allows the crown to be secured.
  • Immediate Load Dental Implants or Teeth In a Day – This type of implant process allows the placement of the crown or temporary tooth at the same time as the dental implant. Patients that have sufficient bone structure in the jaw are good candidates for this option.
  • All-On-4 Implants – All-on-4 implants provide patients with implants in just one appointment. With this option implants are not required for each tooth. Four implants are placed, and this makes the process easier and less invasive. Bone grafting is not needed with this option, and temporary teeth can be placed that same day. With this option there is a healing process while the implants fuse to the bone. Once the healing process is complete, permanent teeth can be placed.

Taking care of your oral and overall health must be a priority. Knowing when you need to call your dentist is important. Practicing good oral hygiene habits help to prevent tooth decay, cavities, and many other issues. Cavities are one of the most common issues patients face, and about 30 percent of Americans have untreated dental cavities. Leaving a cavity untreated can destroy your teeth leading to tooth loss, infection, and other more serious conditions.

It is helpful for patients to understand what a cavity is, and also know what symptoms to look out for if you think you may have a cavity.

What is a Cavity?

A cavity is when bacteria or food build up and form plaque on your teeth. The bacteria eat away at the enamel on your teeth and cause decay. Good oral hygiene habits are so important, and brushing and flossing can help you get rid of the plaque build up to prevent cavities from developing. Once the cavity is formed there is a small hole in your tooth, and if left untreated the cavity can destroy your tooth or develop an infection.

What Are the Signs of a Cavity?

There are signs you can look out for that may indicate you have a cavity. If you experience any of these signs we encourage you to contact our office, and our staff will get you in as soon as possible. Our team always works to keep our patient’s teeth and mouth healthy and pain free.

• Sensitivity to hot and cold that lingers and does not go away
• Sensitivity to sweet foods or drinks
• A toothache that is on or around one or more teeth
• Pain when you bite down or pain during eating
• Discoloration, white spots, or staining on a tooth
• A small hole or mark on your tooth

Need to Contact Our Office?

Knowing these signs can help you decide if you need to contact a dentist. We always tell patients to never hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns. We are here to help, and a cavity should never be left untreated.

All-on-4 implants provide patients with dental implants in just one appointment.  This type of implant process is also known as Teeth in a Day, and is a fixed denture that is typically supported by 4 implants. All-on-4 implants are placed strategically, and implants are not required for each tooth making this an easy process. Implants are a permanent restorative solution that lasts for years. Implants fuse to the jawbone, and create a stable base allowing them to withstand more pressure than our natural teeth.

At North Texas Oral & Facial Surgery in Wylie, TX, we provide our patients with many restorative options, and help them choose which option best fits their needs.

Who Is a Good Candidate for All-on-4 Implants?

Any patient can be considered for All-on-4 implants and scheduling a consultation with us is the first step towards beautiful teeth. Typically candidates for All-on-4 implants are missing some or most of the teeth along the dental ridge. Other candidates may be struggling with their dentures and are looking for a quick solution.

During our examination process the dentist will check to make sure the patient has enough gum tissue and jaw structure to support the implants. If needed, bone grafting can be done to provide the additional support required. All-on-4 implants are a great option for patients that want a quick restoration solution to improve their smile and overall mouth function.

What Can I Expect During the Healing Process?

Patients can expect a one to two month healing process after their All-on-4 procedure. With All-on-4 implants the healing process tends to be quicker compared to other options. The healing period gives the implants time to fuse to the jawbone. After your implants are placed we recommend patients follow a liquid diet for the first few days. Patients can move to a soft food diet, and eventually resume normal activity. We do require patients to return to our dental office in Wylie, TX for periodic follow up visits. This ensures the implants are healing properly.

IV Sedation is used in dentistry for patients that suffer from dental anxiety, have a bad gag reflex, or patients that have had a bad dental experience in the past. IV Sedation also helps patients get through very long or complicated dental procedures. In some cases IV Sedation is the best choice to help keep patients relaxed and calm during their procedure. IV Sedation is given intravenously, and is a type of sedation that is controlled by the doctor. IV sedation can provide moderate sedation or deep sedation depending on the treatment and patient’s needs. Patients are usually in a semi-awake state, and have the ability to communicate if needed. Most patients do not have any memory of the procedure with IV sedation.

At North Texas Oral & Facial Surgery, we always make our patient’s health a priority, and work with each patient to choose the best type of dental sedation in Wylie, TX. During every procedure we monitor the patient’s breathing and blood pressure carefully to ensure the procedure goes smoothly. Many patients wonder if they have used IV sedation in the past, will it still be effective if they need another procedure. IV sedation will always be effective and works quickly. There is no need to worry if you have been recommended for another procedure using IV sedation. You will still receive the same effects the next time you need to use this type of sedation for a dental procedure.

What are the Benefits of IV Sedation?

  • Great alternative to general anesthesia
  • Is a strong sedative compared to other sedation options
  • Effects are felt quickly and administered intravenously
  • Shorter recovery time
  • Patients have temporary amnesia and do not remember the dental procedure
  • Helps to suppress gag reflex
  • Allows patients to remain in a semi-conscious state

Recovery is easy and most patients will need to stay in the procedure room for about an hour. We recommend patients bring a friend or family member to help drive them home. Patients may feel drowsy or sluggish, but this should subside after a day or so. Physical activity should be limited until the side effects wear off completely.

Looking for a Sedation Dentist Near You?

If you are looking for a dentist that provides sedation dentistry near you, our team is here to help. IV sedation is a great way to help patients that feel anxious get through dental procedures. It is a safe and effective method, and can be used multiple times if needed.

Our team provides each patient with a detailed consultation to discuss any procedure needed, and we review all of the sedation details so patients know what to expect the day of their appointment. We want our patients to feel relaxed when they enter out office, and know they are in good hands.

If you are interested in finding out more about IV sedation and how this option can help you get through your next procedure, contact Dr. Ajay Ganti’s team to schedule your consultation at our dental office in Wylie, TX!

Why Would Dental Implants Be Needed

Dental implants have been used for years to improve the look of patients’ smiles. They can replace one or more missing teeth and act as the foundation for restorations like crowns, bridges and full overdentures. Implants are a great way to replace a missing tooth without compromising any surrounding teeth. They work on their own, preventing the need for partial dentures or traditional bridge work.

What are Implants?

The majority of implants that are used are made of titanium. This improves their durability and allows them to withstand the daily force of chewing, grinding and eating. You can benefit from implants because they undergo a process known as osseointegration while they heal. This means that the implant will actually fuse with the surrounding bone to become a solid and integral part of your smile. Most implants can heal completely within three to six months.

Who is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

In order for a new implant to heal properly, patients need healthy and solid bone in the area where the implant is going to be placed. Bone loss can occur as a result of extractions as well as gum disease. We can determine if you have gum disease with the help of an x-ray. If you have bone loss, we’ll recommend having a bone grafting done prior to having the implants placed. This will help to improve the chances of the implant healing and can provide it with a secure foundation to bond with over time. The vast majority of our patients who want or need implants can safely come into the office to have the surgery done.

What Can Be Expected During Surgery?

The surgery involves making an incision through the gums and then placing a titanium implant into the jawbone. You will then come in regularly so that we can check on the implant while it is healing. Once the implant has fused fully with the jawbone, we will be able to make a restoration that will be placed over top of it. This might be a single dental crown, larger bridge or even an overdenture that will stay in place by snapping onto the implants that you have had placed in our office.

If you would like to learn more about dental implants and how they work, call the office today so that one of our friendly staff members can further assist you.

What Are Dental Implants

Dental implants are designed to replace one or more teeth. They are often made of titanium and can be used to hold onto restorations like crowns, bridges and even complete overdentures. Implants can replace both the roots as well as the crown of a missing tooth. This prevents the need for a partial denture or bridge that would otherwise compromise surrounding teeth.

Understanding Implant Technology

Implants are often made of titanium, which ensures they can withstand the daily pressures of eating, chewing and grinding. They are surgically embedded into the jawbone, where they are given time to fuse and bond with the surrounding bone. This process takes roughly three to six months, though will vary from one patient to another. The implant will then act as a foundation for crowns, bridges and even complete overdentures that are kept in place by the implants themselves.

Dental Implants Are Designed To Replace
Understanding Implant Technology

How Long Will New Implants Last?

The majority of dental implants can last for decades without needing any type of repairs or replacement. Many patients have implants that are 30 to 40 years without needing to get them replaced. This is because implants are embedded and fused with the underlying jawbone. The restoration that is placed on top of the implant will need to be replaced at some point, but the implant itself will remain strong and durable for years to come. This is why implants have become such a go-to option for patients wanting full and healthy-looking smiles.

What Can You Do to Maintain Your Implants?

The best way for you to maintain your new implants and smile is by practicing good oral hygiene. Bone loss can cause your implants to become loose or damaged. Because gum disease is a leading cause of bone loss, it is important to prevent the disease by brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily and making time for regular checkup visits. Facial trauma can also have an effect on your implants, so it is important to come in for care and treatment if you experience any type of injury to your face or mouth. Implants are a care-free restorative option that can do wonders for improving and filling in different areas of your smile.
